Norfolk, Va. - Drexel field hockey dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 13 Old Dominion as the Lady Monarchs scored twice in the first half and held on to remain unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play. The loss dropped the Dragons to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAA while Old Dominion moved to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Despite the loss, the Dragons remain in third place in the standings behind Old Dominion and James Madison who are both undefeated in the CAA.
The Dragons opened the game strong with scoring opportunities off penalty corners but it was the Lady Monarchs who got on the board. After 22 minutes of play, Kathleen Shea scored when she took a centering pass from Shannon Mobley and fired a shot that beat goalie Colleen McAndrew. Old Dominion was able to double its lead just before halftime after receiving a free hit just outside the arc with three seconds remaining. The Lady Monarchs quickly sent the ball toward the cage where Loran Hatch deflected it in with just one second remaining in the first half.
The second half was a hard-fought battle played mostly in the midfield. The two teams were able to generate just two shots each in the half and neither was awarded a penalty corner. For the game, the Lady Monarchs outshot the Dragons, 13-8, while both teams registered three penalty corners. McAndrew made five saves for the Dragons while Kelly Driscoll made six stops for Old Dominion. The contest marked the first time in conference play this season that the Dragons allowed more than one goal. Despite the two goals allowed, McAndrew's goals against average in the CAA is just 0.80.
For its next game, Drexel will play Penn at Franklin Field on Oct. 12 at 7:15 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
